Code One Beta

FINN is heading onto the water.

Code One is the first FINN beta intended for real-world testing with sailors and boaters.

It is the first step toward a simple goal: marine technology should help captains understand what matters, not simply present more information.

Why Code One?

In sailing, Code sails are specialized sails designed to fill the space between traditional headsails and downwind sails.

A Code Zero is typically a light-air reaching sail, designed to help a boat keep moving efficiently when the wind is too far forward for a spinnaker but too light for a traditional headsail to perform well.

A Code One moves farther into the reaching range, giving sailors another tool for conditions where the boat needs to keep speed and balance as the wind angle changes.

We borrowed that language for FINN’s development.

Code Zero was our internal proving ground — the first working build used to test the fundamentals, validate the architecture, and begin taking FINN onto the water.

Code One is the next step: the first FINN beta being prepared for use by a broader group of sailors and boaters in real-world conditions.

The names are more than version numbers. Like the sails that inspired them, each Code represents FINN moving into a new operating range as the platform develops.

Built around the voyage, the vessel, and what comes next

FINN is being designed to understand more than position alone. The voyage, the vessel, the surrounding conditions, and what happened along the way all matter.

Different vessels behave differently, so FINN is being built with vessel context in mind rather than treating every boat the same.

A voyage should leave behind more than a line on a map. Over time, FINN is intended to turn experience on the water into useful context for what comes next.

Starting with iOS, not ending there

Code One is starting on iOS because it gives us a consistent platform for testing FINN in real conditions across iPhone and iPad, using a capable set of sensors already carried by many sailors and boaters.

FINN itself is not being designed around a single device, operating system, or onboard setup. The intelligence is intended to remain independent of how the underlying marine data is collected, allowing FINN to grow across different vessels, devices, and systems over time.

For boats with instruments — and boats without them

FINN is being built for boaters of all kinds and all experience levels.

On a small or lightly equipped boat, Code One can use capabilities already available on iOS devices to provide a basic layer of situational instrumentation and voyage awareness.

On a more fully equipped vessel, FINN is intended to complement — not replace — existing marine electronics. As the platform grows, we plan to integrate with broader onboard systems and marine data standards such as NMEA, bringing more of the vessel’s information into one coherent layer of context and insight.

Help test FINN

As Code One gets closer to release, we’ll invite a small group of sailors and boaters to help test FINN in real conditions.

Early testers will help us understand what is useful, what needs work, and where FINN should go next.
